I found the Cornerstone Initiative when my wife Stacey and I moved to Huntsville in the summer of 2020. After serving as a volunteer leader for Operational Christmas Child in Northern Virginia, I was hoping to volunteer with a locally focused ministry and discovered The Cornerstone Initiative’s mission. Cornerstone’s Christ-centered approach to building transformational relationships in Huntsville’s low-income community immediately resonated with me and I felt God’s leading to contact Cornerstone about volunteer opportunities. I couldn’t feel more on mission for the Lord and for our community than with Cornerstone.

I was introduced to The Cornerstone Initiative in 2018 through a Leadership Greater Huntsville classmate. At that initial meeting I heard Debbi’s heart and passion for serving Christ and serving others. I knew then that this was a ministry I wanted to support. I have enjoyed serving as a mentor in the initiatives of Faith and Finances and Amplify. I am truly grateful for the leadership of The Cornerstone Initiative and trust God will bring more impact to our community through this growing ministry.

Vice-Chair

My husband Tony and I attend a church that is a mission partner with the Cornerstone Initiative. When I heard about an opportunity to serve the Jobs for Life program, I thought my skills as a human resources manager would be a perfect fit. Not only is the Cornerstone Initiative a wonderful way to serve our community, but the leadership is inspiring and their heart and actions are in the right place. I hope I am able to serve for many years to come.

Treasurer

I became involved with CornerStone through my employer, ServisFirst Bank, and was drawn to the mission of the organization as well as the individuals who were involved. The love of Jesus is evident, and the style of support is unique. I want to be involved in making an impact in our community, and I believe CornerStone is doing that.

I’ve worked with inner city Boy and Girl Scouts and their families in the Terry Heights community since 1999. It was by faith that I was introduced to Cornerstone by a former co-worker. We share the same fundamental values of helping others and that is the reason I joined the Cornerstone Initiative team in 2019.

Secretary

The Cornerstone Initiative is a pillar in our community and the best example I’ve found in Huntsville of God’s kingdom work. I, along with my family, am blessed to have the opportunity to contribute time, talents, and treasure to this ministry.

I believe strongly in The Cornerstone Initiative’s mission and in its leadership. Cornerstone focuses on supportive and lasting relationships, coupled with initiatives that provide very practical and tangible tools to help individuals experience and sustain meaningful change in their lives. When this is led by gifted, humble, transparent staff leaders who consistently seek God’s will for their work, the result is a unique and powerful opportunity for all to experience transformation.  I am honored to serve in support of The Cornerstone Initiative.

My involvement with Cornerstone Initiative started many years ago when I volunteered as a mentor for the Faith and Finances class. After that experience I was hooked! I have since been involved since then with both Faith & Finances and Jobs for Life classes. The impact and value of this ministry may be best reflected by the COMMUNITY that is built during each class as relationships begin and strengthen. During this journey our participants are taking, Cornerstone is right beside them encouraging (and challenging) them through the love of Christ.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Debbi and Tony Akers for 25 years, and I know where their passion is. Through Cornerstone’s programs such as Faith & Finances and Amplify, we have the opportunity to literally sit side by side with people and walk with them as God transforms their lives for the better. Many of the people we have served were not only able to break the cycle of financial poverty they have always known, but we have also seen them grow spiritually through an ever-expanding and supportive faith community.

I first learned about Cornerstone during a local networking meeting where Debbi Akers (Executive Director/Cornerstone) informed me of the upcoming "Cornhole for Cornerstone" Fundraiser event. I entered a team that first year as the organization was already something that I felt I could align with, but that quickly grew into a much deeper appreciation for the ministry and the incredible work God is doing through it.  Amazing things were happening when people were being surrounded by genuine relationships, practical guidance, and a true love of Christ. I later began serving on the Board of Influencers, Event Planning Committee, and eventually the Board of Directors. As a local business owner, I've been blessed to build many wonderful local relationships, especially within the small business community. One thing I hope to do through my service is encourage other business owners and leaders to discover Cornerstone's mission and be part of the life-changing work happening every day. It's an honor to serve alongside such faithful leaders and help advance a mission to bring lasting change to so many across our community.
